The water is also very important for life here. The river branches out into famous rivers like the Ngawun, Pathein, and Toe. There are also many lakes in the region. People catch fish, prawns, and other seafood to eat and sell. This helps the local economy stay strong.

History shows that this land has changed many times. Long ago, it was part of the Mon kingdoms. Different groups like the Burmese, Arakanese, and Mon ruled the area at different times.

The Ayeyarwady Region is a vital area in Myanmar. It occupies the delta region of the Ayeyarwady River. A delta is a landform created where a river meets a larger body of water.

This region sits between latitude 15° 40' and 18° 30' north. It is located between longitude 94° 15' and 96° 15' east. To the northwest, it borders the Rakhine State. The Bago Region lies to the north and east. The Bay of Bengal forms the southern and western boundaries. The Rakhine Yoma, or Arakan Mountains, flank the region in the west.

The geography of the delta is shaped by many waterways. The mighty Ayeyarwady River branches out into several famous rivers. These include the Ngawun, Pathein, and Toe rivers. There are also many lakes found throughout the region.

One notable body of water is Inye Lake in Kyonpyaw township. This lake is a major supplier of fresh water fish. The region's landscape is mostly low-lying and flat. This makes it ideal for large-scale agriculture but also vulnerable to weather. The area is known as the "granary of Burma" because of its massive food production.

Agriculture is the foundation of the local economy. Most of the land is used for paddy cultivation. This means farmers grow rice in flooded fields. Because of this, the region is the main rice producer for the country. Farmers also grow maize, sesame, groundnut, and sunflower. They produce beans, pulses, and jute as well.

Fishery is another essential industry for the people. They produce fish, prawns, fish-paste, and fish sauce. However, many rural households face the challenge of landlessness. Most farms are quite small, with nearly half being under 5 acres.

The history of the delta involves many different groups. In ancient times, it was part of Mon kingdoms like Hanthawaddy. From the 11th century AD, it fell under Burmese, Arakanese, or Mon rule. An ancient trade route once passed through this area. It connected Sichuan in modern Yunnan Province to Bengal.

Before British rule, the delta was mostly forest and mangrove. It had only isolated settlements of Mon, Karen, and Burman people. Land was often flooded, which limited how much rice could be grown.

British control began after the second Anglo-Burmese War in 1852. This started a period of rapid economic change. The British introduced a land taxation system called Ryotwari. They also used the Patta system to grant land ownership rights. These systems allowed farmers to buy, sell, and transfer land. Between 1857 and 1907, many people migrated from northern regions. They were attracted by the new opportunities in agriculture. By 1901, Indians made up about 7 percent of the population. Many were Chettiar moneylenders from Bengal. They provided large loans that helped the rice economy expand.

Economic shifts caused great hardship during the early 20th century. By the late 1920s, available land for rice cultivation began to diminish. As land became scarce, prices rose very quickly. In Prome, land costs rose from 29 rupees per acre in 1900 to 103 rupees by 1915. Many Burmese farmers fell into deep debt. They often lost their land to creditors through foreclosures. By 1935, non-agriculturalists owned about 50 percent of the delta land. This period of land dispossession led to social unrest and violence. The Japanese invasion in 1941 caused further economic turmoil.

The region has also faced devastating natural disasters. In May 2008, Cyclone Nargis made landfall near Haigyi Island.

The storm brought 120 mph sustained winds and massive storm surges. It caused heavy devastation across the low-lying delta. Labutta Township was hit hardest, with around 80,000 deaths reported. The final death toll reached at least 146,000 people. This included 90,000 confirmed dead and 56,000 or more missing. It remains the worst natural disaster in the recorded history of Myanmar.

Today, the Ayeyarwady Region is divided into eight districts. These are Pathein, Kyonpyaw, Hinthada, Labutta, Maubin, Myanaung, Myaungmya, and Pyapon. Pathein serves as the capital city. The population was estimated at over 6.5 million in 2022. Most residents are Bamar, while the Karen form a significant minority. The majority of the people follow the Buddhist religion. The region also has beautiful tourist destinations. People visit Chaungtha Beach and Ngwesaung Beach for holidays. These coastal areas are popular with both foreigners and local Burmese travelers.
