The capital city is Naypyidaw, but the largest city is Yangon.

The history of the region stretches back hundreds of thousands of years. Archaeological evidence shows that Homo erectus lived there as early as 750,000 years ago. Much later, evidence of Homo sapiens appeared around 25,000 years ago.

By the 2nd century BCE, the first city-states emerged. These were founded by the Pyu people, who spoke Tibeto-Burman languages. They migrated from what is now Yunnan. The Pyu culture was influenced by trade with India. This trade brought Buddhism and new architectural ideas to the region.

In the 1050s, the Pagan Kingdom was established. This kingdom unified the Irrawaddy valley and its surrounding areas. It was a major power in mainland Southeast Asia. During the 12th and 13th centuries, the Pagan Empire competed with the Khmer Empire. The rulers of Pagan were very dedicated to Theravada Buddhism. They built over 10,000 Buddhist temples in the capital zone alone.

Later, the Taungoo dynasty rose to power. In the 16th century, they created the largest empire in Southeast Asian history. The Konbaung dynasty also ruled a large area in the early 19th century.

British influence changed the course of Myanmar's history. After three Anglo-Burmese Wars in the 19th century, the British East India Company took control. Myanmar became a British colony.

The country experienced a brief Japanese occupation during World War II. After the Allies reconquered the territory, Myanmar moved toward independence. On 4 January 1948, the country declared independence under the Burma Independence Act 1947. Since that time, the nation has faced continuous unrest and political conflict.

Political stability has been difficult to maintain in the post-independence era. A coup d'état occurred in 1962, leading to a military dictatorship. In 1988, the 8888 Uprising led to a transition toward a multi-party system. However, the military junta continued to rule directly until 2011. A civilian government was briefly installed after the 2010 general election. During this time, political prisoners like Aung San Suu Kyi were released.

Despite these changes, the military kept control over key government operations. Following the 2020 election, the military seized power again in a 2021 coup d'état. This led to the rule of the State Administration Council (SAC).

The current political situation has caused significant human suffering. The 2021 coup led to widespread protests and a civil war.

Many people are in dire need of humanitarian assistance. The military has also faced international condemnation for its treatment of ethnic minorities. The Rohingya genocide remains a major source of international tension.

Myanmar possesses vast natural wealth and economic potential. The country is rich in jade, gems, oil, and natural gas. It also has large amounts of teak and other minerals.

In terms of renewable energy, Myanmar has the highest solar power potential in the Great Mekong Subregion. However, the economy faces many challenges. It is one of the least developed countries in the world. In 2013, the nominal GDP was US$56.7 billion. The income gap is among the widest globally because the military junta controls much of the economy.

The name of the country is also a subject of international debate. The military government changed the name from Burma to Myanmar in 1989. This was done to use romanized versions of official Burmese names. Many political and ethnic opposition groups do not recognize this change. They continue to use the name Burma to show they do not accept the military's authority. While the United Nations and many countries use Myanmar, the United States official policy retains Burma. Both names come from the word Mranma, which refers to the majority ethnic group.
