The history of this land goes back a very long time. People lived here during the Paleolithic age. Some stone tools found in Gia Lai province are very old. Around 1,000 BC, people began growing rice in river floodplains. This was part of the Đông Sơn culture. They were famous for making beautiful bronze drums.
For many years, different groups ruled the land. The Han dynasty from China ruled parts of the north for a long time. This lasted from 111 BC until 939. After that, many Vietnamese dynasties took control. The Lý and Trần dynasties had golden eras. During the Trần dynasty, they even stopped three Mongol invasions. The country grew larger over time through a process called Nam tiến. This meant moving and expanding toward the south.
In the 1800s, the country faced big changes. The Nguyễn dynasty was the last imperial family. They surrendered to France in 1883. This meant Vietnam became part of French Indochina. Later, the Viet Minh led a revolution in 1945. They wanted independence from Japan. The 20th century brought many long wars. One was the First Indochina War against France. Another was the Vietnam War between the north and the south.
Vietnam became one single country again in 1976. It is now a socialist state. In 1986, the government started new economic reforms. These changes helped the country join the global economy. Today, Vietnam is a developing country. It is a member of many groups like ASEAN and the WTO.
Vietnam, officially the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam, is a nation at the eastern edge of mainland Southeast Asia.
The name "Việt Nam" has interesting meanings depending on how you read it. In the Vietnamese word order, it means "Viet of the South." In Classical Chinese word order, it can mean "South of the Viet." The term "Việt" has ancient roots. It was used to describe people in the Yangtze basin. By the 3rd century BC, it referred to populations in southern China and northern Vietnam. These groups were collectively known as the Baiyue, or "Hundred Yue."
Human history in this region began in the Paleolithic age. Archaeologists have found stone tools in Gia Lai province. Some claims suggest these tools date back 780,000 years. Fossils of Homo erectus were also found in Lạng Sơn and Nghệ An. Around 1,000 BC, the Đông Sơn culture flourished. This culture developed wet-rice cultivation in river floodplains. They were famous for casting elaborate bronze Đông Sơn drums.
For much of its early history, Vietnam was shaped by powerful dynasties. The Han dynasty from China ruled northern and central regions from 111 BC. This rule lasted until 939. After this, the Vietnamese achieved full independence. The Ngô Quyền defeated the Southern Han at Bạch Đằng River. Later, the Lý and Trần dynasties led golden eras. The Trần dynasty even repelled three Mongol invasions. Over time, the country expanded southward through a process called Nam tiến. This expansion eventually included the Mekong Delta.
The 19th and 20th centuries brought intense conflict and change. The Nguyễn dynasty was the last imperial family. They surrendered to France in 1883. This led to the creation of French Indochina. In 1945, the Viet Minh led by Ho Chi Minh declared independence. This followed the end of Japanese occupation. The First Indochina War followed as France tried to reclaim power. Vietnam won this war in 1954. However, treaties then split the country into two parts.
The Vietnam War was a major conflict between the communist North and the anti-communist South. The North was supported by the Soviet Union and China. The South was supported by the United States. After the North won in 1975, the country reunified. In 1976, it became a unitary communist state. At first, the country struggled with a planned economy and trade embargoes. In 1986, the Communist Party of Vietnam launched major reforms. These reforms moved the nation toward a socialist-oriented market economy.
Today, Vietnam is a developing country with a lower-middle-income economy.
