Kayin State

geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Kayin State is a unique administrative division located in eastern Myanmar. Formerly known as Karen State, the name was officially changed by the military government in 1989. The state serves as a vital border region between Myanmar and Thailand. It is characterized by a rugged, mountainous landscape and a tropical climate.

The capital city of the state is Hpa-An, which also serves as a central hub for government and education.

The physical geography of Kayin State is defined by its dramatic terrain. The Dawna Range runs through the state in a north-northwest to south-southeast direction. In the northwest, the southern end of the Karen Hills provides further elevation. These mountain ranges influence the local weather patterns significantly. Because the state is located in the tropics and sits near the sea, the climate is hot and humid. The lowlands in the south and west experience a tropical monsoon climate. This means the region receives most of its rainfall during the summer months. The temperature in the eastern mountain regions remains high, as the hottest month never falls below 25 degrees Celsius.

Water systems play a crucial role in shaping the landscape and local life. The state is home to several major rivers, including the Thanlwin (also known as the Salween River), the Thaungyin (or Moei River), the Gyaing, and the Attaran. Due to the specific orientation of the mountain ranges, some rivers and creeks actually flow from south to north. The Thanlwin River is a major geographic feature, and its scale is highlighted by large structures like the Thanlwin Bridge.

The history of the region is marked by shifts in power between various kingdoms. Since the mid-11th century, the area was part of successive Burmese kingdoms, starting with the Bagan Empire. Between the 13th and 16th centuries, much of the land belonged to the Hanthawaddy kingdom. The northern sections were controlled by Taungoo, a vassal state of the Ava Kingdom. Later, the region was part of the Taungoo and Konbaung Dynasties. Following the First Anglo-Burmese War (1824-1826), the British seized the southern third of the territory below the Salween River. They took the remaining parts after the Second Anglo-Burmese War in 1852.

Political transitions in the 20th century led to long-term instability. Toward the end of the British colonial era, Karen leaders requested a separate state. This request included much of Mon State and the Taninthayi Region. However, the 1947 Constitution granted a state that was smaller than what leaders had requested. The Karen National Union (KNU) was dissatisfied and sought outright independence. This led to a rebellion in 1949 that continues to this day. The KNU currently maintains the world's longest-running resistance. This ongoing conflict has turned much of the state into a battlefield, which has heavily impacted civilian life.

Demographically, the state is diverse but largely dominated by the Karen people. The population has grown significantly, rising from 858,429 in 1973 to 1,574,079 in the 2014 census. This represents a nearly 49 percent increase between 1983 and 2014. Religion is also a major part of the social fabric. According to the 2014 census, Buddhists make up 84.5% of the population. Other groups include Christians (9.5%), Muslims (4.6%), Hindus (0.6%), and animists (0.1%). Because the terrain is so mountainous, the population is spread out across 4,092 villages. Most of these villages are small, typically containing fewer than 40 households.

The economy of Kayin State relies heavily on agriculture, trade, and tourism. Agriculture is a primary industry, with over 460,000 acres of paddy fields and 260,000 acres of rubber tree plantations. In the Thandaung area, there are over 9,000 acres of coffee plants. Trade is also vital, especially at the Myawaddy border trading post. As the second largest of Myanmar's 15 border posts, it is a major route between Thailand and Myanmar. In 2015, monthly trade through the Mae Sot to Myawaddy crossing was valued at over 3 billion baht. Tourism has also grown, with visitor numbers reaching a record 150,000 in 2016.

Infrastructure and education face unique challenges due to the geography and history of the state. While Hpa-An serves as the center for higher education, featuring institutions like Hpa-An University and the Technological University in Hpa-an, access is limited elsewhere. Constant conflict has resulted in many displaced people and limits educational reach. For example, less than 10% of primary school students in the state reach high school. Additionally, the state struggles with electricity shortages, which can hinder industrial development. Efforts are being made to improve roads and energy supplies to help the region grow.
