The city sits on the west bank of the Ayeyarwady River. Its name in Burmese translates to "near the big river." Myitkyina is located just downstream from a confluence. A confluence is where two rivers meet to form a larger one. Here, the Mali and N'mai rivers join together. This location makes the city a vital transport hub. It serves as the northernmost river port in Myanmar. It is also the terminus, or end point, for the railway.

The climate in Myitkyina is classified as a borderline tropical monsoon climate. This type of weather sits between a tropical savanna climate and a humid subtropical climate. The temperature remains very warm throughout the entire year. There are two distinct seasons. The winter dry season lasts from November to April. The summer wet season occurs from May to October. During the monsoon season, the air is reported to be fresh. In other times, air quality can be poor in the evenings. This happens because residents often dispose of waste by burning it. Most waste, including plastics, is burned in small roadside piles. This often starts in the late afternoon.

Transportation is central to the city's function. The Mandalay–Myitkyina Railway has been in use for 100 years. A train journey from Mandalay to Myitkyina takes almost 24 hours. This rail line is essential for farmers and traders to deliver goods. The city is also served by Myitkyina Airport. This airport connects the city to Putao, Mandalay, Yangon, and Lashio. For road travel, the city connects to Laiza, Bhamo, and China. One notable road is the Myitkyina-Tanai-India road. This is also known as the Ledo Road, which was constructed by the British.

The history of the region is tied to ancient trade. The area around Myitkyina and Waingmaw has been a trading zone between China and Myanmar for a long time. In 1294, the nearby town of Katkyo was founded. For many years, the region was ruled by Shan states like Möng Kawng. Later, it came under the control of Burmese and Kachin authorities. In the late 1890s, American Baptist missionaries George J. Geis and his wife arrived. In the 1950s, Herman Tegenfeldt built the Geis Memorial Church. This church is part of the Kachin Baptist Convention.

Myitkyina saw significant conflict during World War II. Japanese forces captured the town and the local airbase in 1942. In August 1944, Allied forces recaptured the city. This happened after a prolonged siege and heavy fighting. The battle involved Nationalist Chinese divisions and the Chindits. It also included Merrill's Marauders from the Northern Combat Area Command. They fought against the 33rd Imperial Japanese Army. The town was a strategic target because of its rail and water links. It was also located on the planned route of the Ledo Road.

The city is a major center for the economy of Kachin State. It is known for many natural resources. These include jade, gold, amber, teak, and wood. Agricultural products are also important. The jade industry is particularly large. In 2010 and 2011, nearly US$2 billion in jade was exported every year. However, recent fighting has changed the economy. Conflict between the government and the Kachin Independence Army rebels has caused most businesses to decline. Currently, as of February 2025, there is an ongoing civil war.
