It sits in the Uttarkashi District of Uttarakhand. This glacier is one of the main sources of the Ganges River. It covers an area of about 200 square kilometers. The ice has a volume of over 20 cubic kilometers.

This place is very important for the water systems in the mountains. Many people consider this area to be a holy site.

This glacier works by flowing slowly toward the northwest. It starts in a high area called a cirque below Chaukhamba. The ice moves and breaks into pieces called crevasses. These are deep cracks in the ice. As the ice melts, it creates many small pools called supraglacial lakes.

The melting ice also forms the Bhagirathi River. This river is a major part of the Ganges system. The ice flows past many different types of rocks like granite and schist.

People have studied this glacier for a long time. Measurements of the ice began way back in 1780. Scientists from NASA and other groups now track its changes. They use satellite images to see how the ice moves.

They want to help researchers understand the history of all glaciers. This helps us see how the world is changing. Tracking these changes is a very big job for scientists.

There are many important numbers and names to know about this place. The glacier is about 30.2 kilometers long. It is between 0.5 and 2.5 kilometers wide. Three main tributary glaciers flow into it. These are named Raktvarn, Chaturangi, and Kirti.

The Raktvarn system has seven smaller glaciers. The Chaturangi system includes glaciers named Seeta, Suralaya, and Vasuki. These names help us map the whole area.

Visiting the glacier is a big adventure for many people. The end of the glacier looks like a cow's mouth. This place is called Gomukh.

Many Hindus make a long trek to reach this holy spot. They walk past places like Devgadh, Chirbhasa, and Bhojwasa. Some people even climb the nearby peaks like Shivling or Meru. These mountains are very hard to climb. The path can be difficult because of rockfalls and old trails.
