A U-shaped valley is a special kind of mountain landform.

Most valleys are shaped like the letter V because rivers carve them. But these valleys have steep, straight sides and a flat or rounded floor. Scientists call them glacial troughs or U-shaped valleys. They are very important for understanding how our Earth changes over time. These valleys can be tens of miles long and several thousand feet deep.

These valleys form through a thing called glaciation.

It starts when a huge glacier moves down a slope. As the ice travels, it scrapes the ground through scouring. This action removes the parts of the rock that resist the flow. This creates a shape that minimizes friction. The ice can spread out in open areas. However, it carves much deeper when it is confined to a valley. This process can take 10,000 to 100,000 years to finish.

In the past, some people did not believe ice could do this. They thought ice was too soft to carve hard bedrock. However, geologists like Penck and Davis supported the idea of glacial erosion. Scientists later used numerical models to explain how this carving happens. They found two main ways these valleys look. The Rocky Mountain model shows a deepening effect. The Patagonia-Antarctica model shows a widening effect from ice sheets.

Many famous places have these wonderful valleys.

You can find them in the Andes, Alps, and the Himalayas. They are also in the Rocky Mountains and New Zealand. In Norway, some valleys meet the sea to become fjords. The Western Brook Pond Fjord is a famous example in Canada. Some valley floors have deep holes that fill with water. These are called fjord-lakes, like Mjøsa in Norway, which is 453 meters deep.

When the ice melts, it leaves many things behind. The valley might have small boulders called glacial erratic or glacial till. Sometimes, small streams called misfit streams run through them. If a small valley joins the main one, it leaves a hanging valley. These often create beautiful waterfalls. You might also see moraines, which are like natural dams made of sediment. These features help us see how the ice once moved across the land.
