They sit right along the border of Tennessee and North Carolina. This range is part of the larger Appalachian Mountains. People often call them the Smokies for short. The name comes from a natural fog that hangs over the peaks.

This fog looks like plumes of smoke from far away. It happens because plants release special gases into the air. These gases turn into vapors at normal temperatures.

Nature works in many ways to create these mountains. Long ago, the North American and African plates collided. This event started the building of the Appalachian range.

Even though glaciers never reached the Smokies, they made the air colder. This change affected the plants and the soil. The freezing and thawing created large rock fields on the slopes.

Today, the mountains catch a lot of rain and snow. This moisture helps the many rivers and streams flow.

Humans have a long history with this beautiful land. Small communities once lived in the river valleys and coves.

The National Park Service now looks after 78 of their old structures. These buildings are part of historic districts in the park. The park itself was established in 1934 to protect the area.
