The Carpathian Mountains are a huge mountain system in Europe.

They form a large arc shape across Central and Southeast Europe. This range is the third longest in Europe. The Ural Mountains and the Scandinavian Mountains are even longer. The Carpathians stretch through many different countries. They pass through Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Poland. They also move through Ukraine, Romania, and Serbia.

The total length of the range is over 1,500 kilometers.

Nature is very busy and alive in these mountains. The area provides a home for many large animals. You can find brown bears, wolves, and lynxes there. Chamois also live in these high places. Romania has the highest number of these animals.

More than one-third of all European plant species live here too. The mountains also have many mineral and thermal waters. Thermal water is water that is naturally warm. Romania holds one-third of all these waters in Europe.

Many parts of the mountains have very old forests. These are called virgin forests because they have not been changed by people. Romania has the second largest area of these forests in Europe. The Southern Carpathians hold the largest area of forest that has not been broken into pieces.

However, these forests face hard jobs. People often cut down trees through clearcutting or illegal logging. This makes it difficult to keep the forests safe.

Long ago, the Earth changed to make these mountains.

The area used to be part of small oceans. Moving pieces of the Earth's crust pushed the ground upward. This process is called the Alpine orogeny. The mountains are made of many different types of rock. Some areas have rocks that were scraped off the sea bottom. In the Western Carpathians, people found lots of gold, silver, and iron. The Roman emperor Trajan even took 165 tons of gold from this region.

The mountains have many different names in different languages.

In the second century, a writer named Ptolemy recorded the name Carpates. Some people think the name comes from old tribes called the Carpi. Others think it comes from words meaning rock or rugged. The mountains are not one single line of peaks. Instead, they are made of several different groups. The highest peaks are in the Tatra Mountains. The highest point is Gerlachovský štít in Slovakia.
