They belong to the larger Western Romanian Carpathians. These mountains are not one long, unbroken line. Instead, they have many low and easy paths. These paths lead toward the Crișana plains. The mountains sit between the Barcău River to the north and the Mureș River to the south. To the east lies the Transylvanian Plateau.

These mountains took a very long time to form. It all began during the Precambrian period. Later, movements in the earth changed the landscape during the Silurian and Carboniferous periods. During the Cretaceous period, the land rose up. This created low areas called depressions. These spots once held lakes where rivers left behind sediments. Finally, the mountains reached their current height at the start of the Quaternary period.
