It sits on the border of Upper Austria and Styria. Parts of the mountain massif also reach into Salzburg. Because it touches three states, people call it the "three-state mountain." It is the second-highest peak in the Northern Limestone Alps. The main summit reaches an elevation of 5,652 meters. The mountain is part of a large area with many peaks.

The mountain is made of a special rock called Dachstein limestone. This rock comes from the Triassic time. This stone has many holes and cracks in it. These cracks create a rich cave system throughout the mountain. Some of these are the largest caves in all of Austria. You can visit the Mammuthhöhle or the Hirlatzhöhle. Another famous place to visit is the Eisriesenhöhle.

Many people love to look for fossils on the mountain. You can find fossils of creatures called megalodonts. There is a path called the Linzer Weg that goes over them. Some fossils look like cow tracks. People call these fossils "Kuhtritte."

The mountain also has large fields of ice called glaciers. These are the largest in the Northern Limestone Alps. They are also the northernmost and easternmost glaciers in the Alps. These include the Hallstätter, Großer Gosau, and Schladminger glaciers. Smaller ice-fields like the Schneelochgletscher also exist. These glaciers are shrinking very fast right now. The Hallstatt glacier has moved back over 1 km since 1908. It might disappear in 80 years.

Climbing the mountain is a very popular activity. Peter Karl Thurwieser first reached the summit on July 18, 1834. He was guided by the Gappmayr brothers. A wooden cross was put at the top during that climb. The south face is very steep and drops almost vertically. The Steiner brothers first climbed this face in 1909. On nice days, up to 100 climbers might be there.
