The area is divided into ten smaller sub-regions. These include places like Bad Aussee, Hallstatt, and Bad Ischl. Some of these areas are in Upper Austria, while others are in Styria or Salzburg.

History has shaped this land for thousands of years. People have lived here since the Neolithic era. Some groups even built stilt houses around 3800 BC.

The famous Hallstatt culture used the salt mines in this area. Later, the Romans also used the salt mines. They even had a settlement and a salt pond at Hallstatt around 100 AD. Many different tribes like the Bavarii and Alpine Slavs lived here too. Over time, the region became part of the lands held by the Habsburg monarchy.

The name Salzkammergut means "salt domain." This is because the salt mines were owned by the princes of the Holy Roman Empire. For a long time, the Habsburgs controlled the salt. They had special offices in Gmunden to manage the mines. In 1745, Empress Maria Theresia made the Gmunden office even more important. The salt industry helped the area grow wealthy for many centuries. In 1997, UNESCO named the Hallstatt-Dachstein landscape a World Heritage Site. This special area covers 284 square kilometers.

Today, the Salzkammergut is a popular place for holidays. People come to swim in the lakes or try water sports. Others enjoy hiking, cycling, and riding horses in the mountains.
