A major river called the Salzach flows through the middle of the state. This river starts in the high mountains in the south. It then travels north toward the Alpine foothills. The state is home to about 561,714 people today.

The landscape changes as you move through different areas. In the north, you will find the flat Salzburg Basin. This area is near where the Salzach and Saalach rivers meet. Further south, the land becomes much more mountainous. This part is often called the Innergebirg. Huge mountain ranges like the Hohe Tauern sit in the south. You can find many peaks that are three thousand meters high.

Salzburg has a very long and interesting history. The name Salzburg actually means "salt city." This is because salt mining was very important for the region. For a long time, it was ruled by Prince-Archbishops. This was a special type of land in the Holy Roman Empire. The territory changed hands many times after the Napoleonic Wars. It was once part of Bavaria for a short time. Eventually, it became a permanent part of the Austrian Empire in 1816.

There are many different towns and cities to explore. The largest city is Salzburg, which has about 148,521 people.

Other important places include Hallein and Saalfelden. There is even a place called Wals-Siezenheim that is known as "Austria's largest village." The state is divided into six main districts. These districts help the government manage the different regions. Each region has its own unique look and feel.

Today, Salzburg is famous for its wonderful culture and history. The historic center of Salzburg City is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This means it is a place of special value to the world. You can see amazing old buildings like the Hohensalzburg Fortress. The state is also known for the annual Salzburg Festival. Many visitors come to see the beautiful Baroque architecture.
