It forms the eastern part of the Great Escarpment. This massive edge surrounds a large area called the central plateau. The mountains sit in South Africa and also form the border for Lesotho.

Many different people have given these mountains their own special names. The Zulu name is uKhahlamba. This means "barrier of up-pointed spears." The Sotho name is Maloti. Early Dutch settlers called them the Drakensberge, which means "Dragons' Mountains."

These mountains were made by powerful forces deep inside the Earth. Long ago, a huge piece of land called Gondwana began to break apart. This caused the ground to bulge and create steep walls. Over many millions of years, these walls moved and changed. The mountains were also shaped by erosion. This is when wind and water wear away the rock.

Even lightning helps to shape the very top of the peaks. Scientists found that lightning strikes can blast and change the mountain landscape.

The rocks in the Drakensberg are very different depending on where you stand. In the north, the mountains have very old quartzite rocks. These rocks are more than 2,000 million years old. Near the border of Lesotho, there is a thick layer of basalt. This is hard lava that erupted 180 million years ago.

This basalt makes the mountains look very steep and rugged. Other parts of the range have softer rocks. These areas look more rounded and smooth from below. The highest peak is Thabana Ntlenyana, which stands 3,482 meters above sea level.

The weather in the mountains is often cool and wet.

It even snows during the winter months. Because it rains so much, many rivers start here. One very famous river is the Tugela River. It creates the Tugela Falls, which is the highest waterfall in the world. These rivers are very important for people. They provide water for many cities and industries in South Africa.

Many amazing living things call the Drakensberg home.
