It is not a single, clearly defined place, but it is known for its dry air and cloudless skies. The weather here can be extreme, with very high heat and very deep frosts.

Some parts of the land are very dry, like the Tankwa Karoo in the southwest. This area receives only 100 mm of rain each year. However, water can be found deep underground. People use boreholes to reach this water for farming and living. This allows sheep to thrive on the local plants.

The region is divided into two main parts. The Great Karoo is the much larger section.

The Klein Karoo is much smaller and sits in a long valley. This valley is held by two mountain ranges. The Swartberg Mountains are to the north. The Langeberg-Outeniqua range is to the south.

You can only reach the Klein Karoo by driving through narrow paths in the mountains. One famous path is the Swartberg Pass. The Great Karoo is also split by the Great Escarpment. This creates an Upper Karoo and a Lower Karoo.

Long ago, the Karoo looked very different. The land was once part of a huge supercontinent called Gondwana.

About 320 million years ago, a vast basin formed there. At that time, the area sat over the South Pole. Glaciers left thick layers of mud in the basin. Later, the land became an inland sea with swampy areas. These swamps eventually turned into large deposits of coal. The Karoo also has many fossils from ancient living things. These fossils show us what the ecosystem was like hundreds of millions of years ago.

The landscape of the Great Karoo is very special. In the Upper Karoo, you will see flat-topped hills.

These hills are called Karoo Koppies. They are made from hard rock called dolerite. The vegetation is made of plants that like dry places. You might see aloes, euphorbias, or stapelias. These plants are often spaced far apart. In the east, you may find large patches of grassland. These grasslands once supported very large herds of animals. Today, sheep graze on the hardy plants found here.

The Karoo is also a wonderful place for science. The skies are very dark and clear. This makes it perfect for looking at the stars.

The town of Sutherland is very high up. It is known as the coldest town in South Africa. Near the town, there is a large telescope. It is the largest optical telescope in the Southern Hemisphere. There are also many radio dishes used to study the sky. These tools help scientists study our own Milky Way galaxy. The stable ground and dark skies make it a great home for these machines.
