Grossglockner

geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Grossglockner is a very famous mountain in the Alps. It is the highest mountain in Austria, reaching 3,798 metres high.

This mountain sits right on the border between two Austrian states. These states are Carinthia and Tyrol. The peak is part of the Glockner Group in the Hohe Tauern range.

It stands as a very independent peak in the mountains. This means it sits far away from other huge mountains. From the top, you can see a huge part of the Earth. The view reaches far across the land to many different places.

The mountain has a very special shape that looks like a pyramid. It actually has two main points at the top. The big one is called the Grossglockner. The smaller one is called the Kleinglockner.

A high gap called the Obere Glocknerscharte sits between them. This gap is the highest mountain pass in all of Austria. On the eastern side of the mountain, there is a lot of ice. This is the Pasterze glacier. It is the longest glacier in the country of Austria.

People have been interested in this mountain for a long time. In 1782, a scientist named Belsazar Hacquet made a drawing of it. He was one of the first people to describe the mountain in writing.

He even thought the name might come from the German word for bell. This is because the mountain has a shape like a bell. Later, many people tried to climb to the very top. They wanted to see the world from such a high place.

Climbing the Grossglockner was a very hard job in the past. In 1799, a group of people tried to reach the top. They were guided by local men called "Glockners."

They reached the smaller peak, but they did not reach the highest point. In 1800, a much larger group of 62 people tried again. This group included a priest and many helpers. They worked hard to make paths in the snow. Finally, some of them reached the true summit of the Grossglockner.
