A steep gully called the Pallavicinirinne descends from this gap. This channel reaches a gradient of 55 degrees.

Geography defines the mountain as a highly independent peak. It has a topographic prominence of 1,863 metres. This value is the second highest in the entire Alps after Mont Blanc. It also possesses the second greatest topographic isolation in the Alps. Because of this, the view from the summit is incredibly vast. Observers can see more than 10 percent of the Earth's surface. The view reaches the Upper Swabian Plateau and the Bohemian Forest. It even extends to the Padan Plain in the south.

The history of the mountain involves many early explorers. A French scientist named Belsazar Hacquet studied the area in the late 1700s. He produced the first known engraving of the mountain in 1782. He suggested the name might come from the German word "Glocke," meaning bell. This refers to the mountain's shape. Early records show the name "Glocknerer" on a map from 1561. Later, the term "Glockner Berg" appeared in an atlas from the 1760s.

Achieving the first successful ascent was a major challenge. In 1799, an expedition led by Count Franz Xaver of Salm attempted the climb. They used local guides known as "Glockners." This group reached the Kleinglockner but not the main summit. A larger expedition of 62 people arrived in 1800. These climbers prepared the way by installing fixed ropes. Eventually, a priest named Mathias Hautzendorfer and four others reached the true summit. They climbed through the Obere Glocknerscharte to finish the task.

As time passed, the mountain became a center for Alpine tourism. In 1863, Julius von Payer explored the western ridge. Johann Stüdl established a climbing route and a hut in 1868. The first winter ascent occurred in 1875. Count Pallavicini performed a famous ice climb in 1876. He chopped 2,500 steps into the Northeast Face. He also dedicated a new iron summit cross in 1879. This cross was installed in 1880 to celebrate a royal wedding.

Today, the Grossglockner is a significant natural and tourist landmark. It is part of the High Tauern National Park. This area has been a special protected zone since 1986.
