Carinthia is a beautiful state located in the southernmost part of Austria.
The land has two very different types of scenery. In the southeast, there is a large area called the Klagenfurt Basin. This is a flat, sedimentary basin that covers about one-fifth of the state. Most of the big towns and lovely lakes are found here. In the northwest, the land becomes much more rugged. This is the Upper Carinthian region, which reaches up to the high Alpine crest. The Drava River is the main river flowing through this land. Other rivers like the Gurk, Glan, Lavant, and Gail also flow through the valleys.
People have lived in this region for a very long time. Archaeologists found stone tools in a cave that are over 30,000 years old. Much later, people built homes on stilts near Lake Keutschach. Around 300 BC, different tribes formed the Kingdom of Noricum. This kingdom was famous for trading salt and iron. Later, a Slavic group called the Carantani rose to power around the year 600. They lived along the Drava, Mur, and Sava rivers. They even had a special ritual for their leaders using a stone.
The history of the area changed many times as different groups moved in. The Roman Empire took control of the Noricum region in 15 BC. Later, Germanic tribes and other groups like the Visigoths and Ostrogoths passed through. By the year 976, Carinthia became its own duchy. For a very long time, the famous Habsburg family ruled the land. They held power in the region until the year 1918. After the Habsburg monarchy ended, the borders of the state were discussed by leaders in Vienna. This was a very busy time of change for the whole country.
Today, Carinthia is a place where many people come to visit. Tourism is one of the most important ways people earn a living there. Visitors love to see the many beautiful lakes, such as Wörther See and Lake Faak.
Carinthia is the southernmost state in Austria. It is also the least densely populated state in the country. This region is located within the Eastern Alps. It is well known for its rugged mountains and many lakes.
The landscape is divided into two main types of terrain. In the southeast, the Klagenfurt Basin covers about one-fifth of the state. This is an inner Alpine sedimentary basin. Most of the major towns and lakes are located here. The northwest is very different. This is the Upper Carinthian region. It is a mountainous area that reaches the Alpine crest.
Mountain ranges act as natural borders for Carinthia. The Carnic Alps and the Karawanks form the borders with Italy and Slovenia.
The climate in Carinthia is described as a humid continental climate. This means it has hot and moderately wet summers. It also has long and harsh winters. In recent decades, winters have become exceptionally arid. Summer rain often comes in the form of heavy thunderstorms. The main Alpine ridge acts as a meteorological divide. This creates different weather on the windward and leeward sides. The state also experiences the foehn, which is a specific type of wind. Because the terrain is so varied, many microclimates exist. Despite the harsh winters, Carinthia has the most sunshine hours in Austria.
Human history in this region began during the Paleolithic era. Archaeologists found stone artifacts in a cave near Griffen. These items are older than 30,000 years. By 3000 BC, larger settlements appeared in the Lavanttal and Villach regions. People even built stilt houses near Lake Keutschach. Around 300 BC, the Kingdom of Noricum was formed by Celtic and Illyrian tribes. This kingdom was famous for mining iron, gold, and lead. It also traded salt and Mediterranean products. The Roman Empire eventually incorporated Noricum in 15 BC.
After the Roman Empire declined, new groups moved into the area. Slavic tribes arrived and established the principality of Carantania around the year 600. This state stretched along the Drava, Mur, and Sava rivers. The Carantanians had a unique ritual for choosing their rulers. They used the Prince's Stone near Karnburg for this ceremony.
The Habsburg dynasty ruled Carinthia from 1335 until 1918. This was a very long period of history. After the Habsburg monarchy dissolved, the borders of the state were debated. In 1918, leaders in Vienna discussed the new state of German-Austria. They debated whether to include certain Slovene-speaking valleys. Today, the state is a modern part of Austria. Its economy relies on several key industries. Tourism is a major driver of the economy. Other important sectors include electronics, engineering, forestry, and agriculture.
