A large peninsula named Bodanrück sits between the two lakes. There are also several islands. Reichenau is a large island in the Lower Lake. Lindau and Mainau are large islands in the Upper Lake.

Many people live in towns near the water. Some big towns are Constance and Friedrichshafen. The lake is a very important source of drinking water for people in Germany. Long ago, a huge glacier helped make this lake. About 10,000 years ago, the two parts were just one big lake. Over time, the water level sank. This changed the shape of the lake we see today.

The lake is actually made of three connected parts. The main section is the Upper Lake, or Obersee. A large peninsula called Bodanrück separates it from the Lower Lake, or Untersee.

A short stretch of the Rhine river called the Seerhein connects these two lakes. The Lower Lake is divided into smaller areas around the Island of Reichenau.

One section is called Gnadensee, and another is the Rheinsee. The water flows from the Alpine Rhine into the lake in the southeast. It then flows out through the High Rhine near the town of Stein am Rhein.

Long ago, a massive glacier helped shape this landscape. During the ice age, the Rhine Glacier carved out the basin.

About 10,000 years ago, the Upper and Lower lakes were just one single lake. Over many years, the High Rhine eroded the land and caused the water level to sink. This created a ridge called the Konstanzer Schwelle between the two parts. Rivers like the Bregenzer Ach carry sediment from the Alps into the lake. This process slowly changes the depth and shape of the lake today.

People have lived near these waters for a very long time. The earliest traces come from hunters in the Middle Stone Age. Later, people built special homes called pile dwellings on the shores.

You can even see a reconstructed village at Unteruhldingen today. During the Iron Age, groups known as the Celts lived in the area. In the past, different towns even used different local times. In the 1800s, you could travel through five different time zones near the lake! By 1895, everyone finally agreed to use one single time.

The lake has many different names depending on the language. In English, we call it Lake Constance after the city of Constance.

In German, the name Bodensee comes from a village called Bodman. Some people used to call it the "Swabian Sea" as a joke. Many large towns sit along the shores, such as Friedrichshafen and Bregenz.

It sits at the northern foot of the Alps. The lake is located where the borders of Germany, Switzerland, and Austria meet. It is the third largest freshwater lake in Central and Western Europe by surface area. It is also the second largest by volume. The lake is a vital source of drinking water for southwestern Germany.

The lake is actually composed of three distinct waterbodies. The largest part is the Upper Lake, or Obersee. This section covers about 477 square kilometers. It includes the northwestern arm known as the Überlinger See. The second part is the Lower Lake, or Untersee. This section covers about 117 square kilometers. A short stretch of the Rhine called the Seerhein connects these two main bodies.

A large peninsula called the Bodanrück separates the Upper and Lower Lake.

The Lower Lake is further divided into three specific sections. These sections surround the Island of Reichenau. The Gnadensee lies north of the island. The Zeller See is south of Radolfzell. The third section is the mainly Swiss Rheinsee.

The water follows a specific path through the system. The Alpine Rhine flows into the southeast near Bregenz, Austria. It moves through the Upper Lake toward the town of Konstanz. From there, it enters the Seerhein and the Rheinsee. Finally, it flows out as the High Rhine near Stein am Rhein.

Geological forces created this landscape during the Quaternary glaciation. The Rhine Glacier carved out the Lake Constance Basin. This type of feature is called a Zungenbecken, or tongue lake. About 10,000 years ago, the Obersee and Untersee were a single lake. Over time, the High Rhine eroded the land. This caused the lake level to sink. A ridge called the Konstanzer Schwelle emerged to separate the two parts.

Rivers like the Bregenzer Ach also carry sediments from the Alps into the lake. This process gradually decreases the lake's depth.

Human history at the lake dates back thousands of years. During the Mesolithic period, hunters used the area as seasonal camps. Later, Neolithic farmers established shore settlements. They built unique homes called pile dwellings in the wetlands.

Archaeologists have found many of these sites on Lake Überlingen. In the 19th century, the region faced a unique challenge with time. There were five different local time zones around the lake. Towns like Bregenz and Lindau used different times. This caused serious confusion for trade and travel. By 1895, everyone adopted Central European Time (CET).

The lake is known by many different names. In English, it is named after the city of Constance. This name is used in many Romance languages. The German name, Bodensee, comes from the village of Bodman. This village was once a Frankish imperial palace.

In ancient times, Roman geographers used different names. Pomponius Mela called the upper lake Lacus Venetus. Pliny the Elder called them Lacus Raetiae Brigantinus. Some authors also used the poetic term "Swabian Sea." This was actually a mistake based on ancient Roman writings.

Today, many large towns and islands make the area famous. The most populous towns on the Upper Lake include Friedrichshafen and Bregenz.

The largest islands are Reichenau, Lindau, and Mainau. These locations are important for tourism and local life. The lake remains a central part of the geography of the Alpine Foreland. It connects three different nations through its shared waters.
