Many people wonder where the name Klagenfurt comes from. Some scholars think it means "ford of lament" or "ford of complaints."

This might link to old stories about spirits living in swamps. Others believe the name comes from a different word meaning "place in the water." There is even a local story about a baker's apprentice. He was wrongly accused of a crime, and the people cried for him. This story was even told by a man who later became Pope Pius II. In 2007, the city officially added the lake's name to its title. It is now called Klagenfurt am Wörthersee.

Legend tells us how the city first began. People say brave men killed a scary, winged dragon called a lindwurm.

This dragon lived in the marshes near the lake. A tower was once built to watch for the beast. Later, a village grew on the site where the fight happened. History shows the city was actually founded by Duke Herman. He wanted a strong place to control trade routes. Later, Duke Bernhard von Spanheim moved the market to a safer spot. He is known as the true founder of the city.
