Scholars have many theories about the origin of the name Klagenfurt. The name literally translates to "ford of lament" or "ford of complaints."

Some linguists believe the name relates to old Slovene words. They suggest it might come from "cviljovec," a place haunted by a wailing female ghost. This theory links the name to superstitious thoughts about demons in swamps. However, other researchers suggest a different origin. They believe the name may derive from the Italic word "l'aquiliu," meaning a place in the water. This would make the ghost theory obsolete. In 2007, the city officially changed its name to Klagenfurt am Wörthersee. This honors its location on Lake Wörth.

A famous legend describes the city's mythical beginnings. The story says brave men killed a winged dragon called a lindwurm.

This beast lived in the moors near the lake and preyed on the duchy. People built a tower to watch for the dragon. They even used a bull with a hook to bait the beast. A village eventually grew on the site of this battle. In reality, the city has a documented history starting in the late 12th century. Duke Herman founded the settlement to control commercial routes. The area suffered from frequent flooding in its early years. Because of this, Duke Bernhard von Spanheim moved the market to a safer location. He is considered the actual founder of the city.

Klagenfurt has faced many challenges throughout its history. The city survived fires, earthquakes, and invasions by locusts and Ottomans. In 1514, a massive fire almost destroyed the entire city. Following this disaster, Emperor Maximilian I ceded the city to the local nobility. This change led to an economic renaissance. The nobility built grand townhouses and improved the city's layout. They used a geometrical chequer-board pattern designed by Domenico dell'Allio. This Renaissance architect helped create the new city center. New fortifications were built over fifty years. These walls made Klagenfurt the strongest fortress north of the Alps.

The 19th century brought both destruction and growth. In 1809, French troops under Napoleon destroyed the city walls. Only a small part of the fortifications remains today. However, the arrival of the railway in 1863 boosted the economy. The Vienna-Trieste railway line connected the city to the wider region. This helped solidify Klagenfurt as a regional center. During this time, the city became a vital hub for Carinthian Slovene culture. Many important Slovene public figures lived and worked here. The Hermagoras Society publishing house was also founded in the city in 1851.

World War II was a period of great hardship for the citizens. The city was bombed 41 times during the conflict. These attacks killed 612 people and destroyed 443 buildings. Over 1,132 other buildings were damaged. In May 1945, the city was declared an "open city" to avoid more bloodshed. British troops entered the city on May 8, 1945. This date marks the official arrival of the Eighth Army. The city had to deal with complex political claims from both Austria and Yugoslavia. This period required massive efforts to clear rubble and rebuild.
