The university offers many types of academic degrees. There are 41 bachelor's degree programs available to students. These include programs for teacher training. There are also 60 master's degree programs. Students can pursue 4 diploma programs or 26 PhD programs. These degrees cover fields like the natural sciences, law, and social sciences. Some programs, like psychology or economics, have special admission regulations. In 2019, the Digital Science Center, or DiSC, was founded to teach digital skills. This center helps students learn programming languages and data management.

The history of the university began with a Jesuit grammar school. This school was established in 1562 by Peter Canisius. It was financed by salt mines located in Hall in Tirol. On October 15, 1669, Emperor Leopold I re-chartered the school as a university. At that time, it consisted of four faculties. In 1782, the institution was reduced to a lyceum. A lyceum is a smaller type of educational institution. However, Emperor Franz I re-established it as a university in 1826. Because of these two men, the official name is Leopold-Franzens-Universität Innsbruck.

The university has faced many changes through different eras. During the National Socialist era, the school was renamed the Deutsche Alpenuniversität in March 1941. This change happened at the suggestion of Rector Raimund von Klebelsberg. During this time, opponents of the regime were excluded from academic life. After World War II ended in 1945, the school reopened under its original name. In the late 20th century, the university expanded its faculties significantly. New faculties for engineering, humanities, and social sciences were added in 1969 and 1976. In 2004, the Faculty of Medicine was separated to become the Innsbruck Medical University.

One of the most interesting parts of the university is its ceremonial equipment. The university holds original maces from the University of Olomouc. A mace is a ceremonial staff used in formal events. The University of Olomouc closed in the 1850s following political revolutions. Its ceremonial items were transferred to Innsbruck. One original mace dates back to approximately 1572. Another mace used by the Faculty of Law dates to 1833.

In 1998, the university gave an exact copy of the rector's mace to Palacký University.

The university does not have one single campus area. Instead, its buildings are spread throughout the city of Innsbruck. The theology faculty uses buildings that date back to 1562. The main building and the university library opened in 1924. Other locations include the Geiwi tower and the Social Science faculty. The Center of Chemistry and Biomedicine opened in 2012. Most recently, the Ágnes-Heller-House opened in 2023. These various sites allow the university to be integrated into the urban landscape.

The university also holds unique historical treasures in its library. In 2005, researchers found copies of letters written by emperors. These letters were written by Frederick II and Conrad IV. The letters arrived in Innsbruck during the 18th century. They had previously been kept at the Allerengelberg charterhouse in Schnals. The university remains a center for research and significant academic contributions. Its physics department is noted for making many important discoveries. The institution continues to grow through new programs and modern digital research.
