It is unique because it consists of two non-contiguous parts. These parts are North Tyrol and East Tyrol. A strip of land belonging to the state of Salzburg sits between them. The state is also part of a larger Euroregion. This region includes South Tyrol and Trentino in Italy. Tyrol is the third-largest federal state in Austria. Its capital city is Innsbruck.

The geography of Tyrol is defined by the Eastern Alps. The landscape is dominated by high mountain ranges. These include the Ötztal Alps, the Zillertal Alps, and the Kitzbühel Alps. The highest mountain in the state is the Großglockner. It is part of the Hohe Tauern range. The Großglockner reaches a height of 3,797 meters. This makes it the highest mountain in all of Austria.

Important rivers like the Inn and the Isel flow through the valleys. These rivers move through glaciers and alpine passes.

The climate in Tyrol is an inner-Alpine mountain climate. It sits at the boundary of Atlantic, continental, and Mediterranean influences. The weather is shaped by the tall mountain massifs. The Northern Limestone Alps experience high precipitation on their windward slopes. The leeward sides are usually much drier and milder. The northern edge of the Alps is the wettest and snowiest area. In the inner-Alpine valleys, the climate is more moderate. These valleys can have large daily temperature ranges. For example, Innsbruck has a high average maximum temperature in July.

History shows how Tyrol became a distinct territory. In the early Middle Ages, it was part of the Duchy of Bavaria. Later, the Counts of Tyrol achieved imperial immediacy. This meant they were a state of the Holy Roman Empire. The Habsburg dynasty took control of the land in 1363. The residence was moved to Innsbruck in 1420. Tyrol was later part of the Austrian Empire and Austria-Hungary. The Brenner Pass has been a vital route since Roman times. It connects northern and southern Europe through the mountains.

A major political change occurred after World War I. The Treaty of Saint-Germain was signed in 1919. This treaty divided the Tyrolean lands. South Tyrol and Trentino were ceded to the Kingdom of Italy. This left North and East Tyrol within the Republic of Austria. This division remains a defining feature of the region today. During World War II, Tyrol was also a site of resistance. A group led by Walter Caldonelli fought against Nazi Germany. They provided intelligence to the Allies about rocket production.
