It is one part of the larger Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol region. This region is governed under the Italian constitution. The province is made up of 166 municipalities, or local administrative areas. Its capital is the city of Trento. The province covers a large area of more than 12,000 square kilometers. In 2019, the total population was 541,098 people.

The geography of Trentino is defined by its steep, mountainous terrain. It sits within the Alps, a massive mountain range in Europe. The province is home to the Dolomites, which are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Marmolada is the highest mountain in the Dolomites. It features a notable glacier. Other significant peaks include the Kesselkogel Cermis and the Crozzon di Brenta. The highest point in the province is Monte Cevedale. This peak sits on the border with the Province of Sondrio. The Adige River flows through the center of the province. It creates the Adige Valley, which acts as a historical passage between Italy and Central Europe.

Many different valleys shape the local landscape and economy. The Non Valley is famous for its apple production.

Other important valleys include the Sole Valley, Fiemme, and Fassa. The landscape also supports vineyards for producing dry and sparkling wines. Agriculture is a vital industry, and many farmers join cooperatives to work together. Tourism is also a mainstay of the provincial economy. People visit the mountains and places like Lake Garda in the south.

The history of Trentino is complex due to its location. In antiquity, the Raetian people lived here. The area later became part of the Roman Empire's province of Raetia. During the Middle Ages, it was part of the Holy Roman Empire. The Bishopric of Trent was established in 1027 by Emperor Conrad II. This was an ecclesiastical territory, meaning it was governed by church leaders. The Prince-Bishops of Trento ruled from the Castello del Buonconsiglio.

In the 19th century, the region fell under Austrian rule. This period saw the region governed by the House of Habsburg-Lorraine.

World War I brought significant changes to the region's borders. Trentino was a site of heavy fighting on the front lines. It sat between the forces of Austria-Hungary and Italy. Italy occupied the area in November 1918. The Treaty of Saint-Germain-en-Laye in 1919 officially annexed the territory to the Kingdom of Italy. In 1923, the area was renamed Trentino. After World War II, the Gruber-De Gasperi Agreement was signed. This created the autonomous region of Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol. This agreement provided protection and autonomy for the local people.

Today, Trentino enjoys a high degree of political autonomy. It has its own elected government and a legislative assembly. The provincial council consists of 35 members. By law, one member must represent the Ladin minority.

The province manages important sectors like health, education, and transport. The executive power belongs to the provincial government, called the Giunta Provinciale. It is led by a governor, or Presidente. In 2023, the center-right coalition won 21 of the 35 seats. The governor is currently Maurizio Fugatti. The province also participates in the Euroregion Tyrol-South Tyrol-Trentino.

Linguistic diversity is a key feature of the province. While Italian is the main language, other traditions remain strong. Communities speak Ladin, which is a distinct language. There are also German dialects spoken, such as Mòcheno and Cimbrian. These languages reflect the area's Alpine and Central European heritage. The economy is also quite strong compared to other areas. In 2023, the Gross domestic product was 25.5 billion euros. This accounts for 1.2% of Italy's total economic output. The GDP per capita is 126% of the EU27 average. This shows the economic importance of this mountainous province.
