The geography of Tyrol is defined by its rugged Alpine landscape.

The main chain of the Alps runs through the region. This chain physically divides the Alps into northern and southern halves. The landscape features many valleys, some of which remain difficult to access. The most significant are the Inn Valley and the Adige Valley.

Most of the population resides within these two major valleys. Large rivers like the Inn, the Adige, and the Drau flow through the terrain.

Mountain peaks reach impressive heights throughout the region.

The Monte Cevedale stands at 3,769 meters. The Wildspitze is also a prominent peak at 3,768 meters. These mountains heavily influence the local climate and the way people live.

Tyrol possesses a deep archaeological history.

Human settlement traces back to the Palaeolithic era in the Tischofer Cave. Evidence of occupation also exists from the Bronze Age. In 1991, a major discovery occurred in the Ötztal Alps. Scientists found the mummified remains of a man known as Ötzi.

He lived during the Chalcolithic, or Copper Age. His belongings were well-preserved in a glacier. This discovery provided scientists with detailed information about ancient life.

The political history of Tyrol changed significantly during the 20th century. For much of its history, it was part of the Holy Roman Empire. It was also part of the Austrian Empire and Austria-Hungary. Following World War I, the Treaty of Saint-Germain-en-Laye divided the region in 1919. The State of Tyrol remained part of Austria. However, the southern parts became the Region of Trentino-Alto Adige. The Kingdom of Italy seized these areas in 1918. Since 1946, these southern territories have been part of the Italian Republic.

Linguistic diversity is a defining characteristic of the modern region.

There are five distinct language groups present. German and Italian are the primary majority languages. However, several minority languages are also spoken. These include Ladin, Cimbrian, and Mócheno. Ladin is a Rhaeto-Romance language. Cimbrian and Mócheno are considered upper-Bavarian dialects. The region actively promotes and protects these minority languages to preserve local culture.

Urban centers serve as the main hubs for the population.
