The city is positioned on both banks of the Vrbas River. While the surrounding region is quite hilly, the Banja Luka valley is characteristically flat. This geography makes it a natural center for the surrounding area.

The local environment is shaped by the Vrbas River and its tributaries. The Vrbas flows from the Vranica mountain to the south. Inside the city, several rivers flow into the Vrbas. These include the Suturlija, the Crkvena, and the Vrbanja. The area is also known for having numerous nearby springs. To the south, several notable mountains rise from the landscape. These mountains are part of the Dinaric Alps range. They include Ponir, which is 743 meters high. Other peaks include Osmača at 950 meters, Manjača at 1,214 meters, Čemernica at 1,338 meters, and Tisovac at 1,173 meters.

Banja Luka experiences a moderate humid subtropical climate. This means the city has mild winters and warm summers. July is typically the warmest month of the year. January is usually the coldest month. The city sees about 104 rainy days annually. Because of its inland location and high latitude, it snows almost every year. The weather can be influenced by different wind patterns. Strong winds may blow from the north or northeast. Conversely, southern winds can bring hot air from the Adriatic Sea.

The history of the region stretches back to ancient times. There is significant evidence of Roman presence in the area. The Kastel fort in the city center is a remnant of this era. Ancient Illyrian maps refer to the settlement as Ad Ladios. Following the Roman period, Slavs settled in the Balkans during the 6th century. The name Banja Luka was first recorded in a document on 6 February 1494. This document was written by Ladislaus II of Hungary. The name likely means "Ban's meadow." A "ban" was a medieval noble title, and "luka" means valley or meadow.

Ottoman rule began in the city in 1527. During this time, the city became a major commercial and political center. In 1574, Ferhad Pasha Sokolović began building over 200 structures. These included shops, warehouses, baths, and mosques. The Ferhadija Mosque was built in 1579.

Although the mosque was demolished in 1993, it was rebuilt in 2016. In the 19th century, the city saw new industrial growth. Sephardic Jews and Trappists migrated to the area. The Trappists built mills, breweries, and textile factories. The Trappist monastery still leaves a legacy through its cheese and beer production.

Modernization accelerated during the Austro-Hungarian occupation in the late 19th century. This period brought railroads, schools, and new infrastructure. After World War I, the city became the capital of the Vrpas Banovina. This era saw the construction of many important buildings. These included the Banski dvor, a theatre, and a museum. The city also faced significant destruction during World War II. Following the war, the city underwent further changes. In 1969, two powerful earthquakes struck the region. The first occurred on 26 October with a magnitude of 6.0. The second hit on 27 October with a magnitude of 6.4. These events caused significant damage and many people lost their homes.

Today, Banja Luka is a bustling administrative and educational center. The city proper has a population of 138,963 people. The total administrative area includes 185,042 inhabitants.
