Some scholars believe the name comes from a Celtic word. The term *Nāvia* means "trough valley." This likely refers to the shape of the Nišava River valley. The name evolved through various phonetic changes. It passed through Ancient Greek as Naissos. It also appears in Old Serbian and Old Bulgarian as Nyš. Some linguists suggest Proto-Albanian speakers may have lived here. They argue the name transition from Naiss- to Niš follows Albanian patterns. This remains a subject of debate among historical linguists.

During the Roman era, Naissus became a massive urban center.

The Ottoman Empire ruled Niš for about 400 years.

They established the city as a center for military administration. The Ottomans built a massive fortress in the early 18th century.

This structure sits on older Roman and Byzantine foundations. It is one of the best-preserved monuments in the mid-Balkans. The period was marked by significant hardship and violence. In 1809, Serbian revolutionaries fought the Battle of Čegar. Following this defeat, a Skull Tower was built. It served as a grim warning to the people. The city eventually saw the displacement of many Muslim families.

Liberation from Ottoman rule happened in the late 19th century.
