It serves as a major hub in Southeast Europe. The city sits at a vital geographical crossroads. It connects the Pannonian Plain to the Balkan Peninsula. This position is defined by the confluence of two major rivers. The Sava and the Danube rivers meet at this location.

Because of these rivers, Belgrade is the third-most populous city on the Danube. It is also a Beta-Global City. This means it has significant influence on a global scale.

The city's history is one of the longest in Europe. People have lived in this area for many millennia. During the Neolithic period, the Starčevo culture flourished here. They were followed by the Vinča culture around 5500 BC.

The Vinča culture was a sophisticated farming society. They built very large settlements and used early copper metallurgy. They even developed a form of proto-writing called the Old European script. Much later, the Celts settled the region. They named the city Singidūn.

The Romans later conquered the area. They transformed Singidunum into a full-fledged colonia. This was the highest class of Roman city.

Belgrade has changed hands many times due to its strategic location. This position made it a target for many different empires. The city was part of the Byzantine, Frankish, and Bulgarian Empires. It also fell under the rule of the Kingdom of Hungary. In 1284, it became the seat of the Serbian king Stefan Dragutin. Later, it served as the capital of the Serbian Despotate. The Ottoman Empire conquered the city in 1521.

For a long time, the city moved between Ottoman and Habsburg rule. These conflicts often resulted in the destruction of the city. Following the Serbian Revolution, Belgrade regained its status as the capital in 1841. It later served as the capital of Yugoslavia.

The city's geography has made it a site of constant conflict. Belgrade has been battled over in 115 different wars. It has been razed to the ground 44 times. The city has also endured five separate bombings.
