This Roman town had about 5,000 to 6,000 people living in colorful brick houses. The Romans even had a drainage system for their streets. Eventually, the ancestors of the Slovenes moved into the area during the 6th century.

Ljubljana has been part of many different lands throughout its history. It was once the capital of Carniola under the Habsburg monarchy. The city stayed under Habsburg rule until the Austro-Hungarian Empire ended in 1918.

After World War II, it became the capital of the Socialist Republic of Slovenia. This was part of the larger country of Yugoslavia. Finally, in 1991, Slovenia became an independent state. Ljubljana then became the capital of this new, independent nation.

There are many interesting facts and numbers about the city's past. The German name for the city was first written down in 1144.

In the 16th century, about 70% of the 5,000 residents spoke Slovene. The city also faced hard times, like a large earthquake in 1895.
