It is the longest tributary of the Danube river. A tributary is a smaller river that flows into a larger one. The Sava is very important because it carries more water than any other side river of the Danube.

This river helps drain a large area known as the Dinaric Alps. It is joined by many other rivers like the Drina, the Una, and the Kupa. These rivers all add their water to the Sava as it travels.

Many people live in the land around the river. About 8,176,000 people live within the Sava river basin.

To understand how the river starts, we look at northwest Slovenia.

The river begins from two different headwaters. One is the Sava Dolinka, which rises at the Zelenci Pools. The other is the Sava Bohinjka, which starts near Lake Bohinj. These two parts flow together at a place called Radovljica. Once they meet, the river is simply called the Sava.

From there, the water flows southeast through many different landscapes. It moves through hills, valleys, and even past large reservoirs. These reservoirs are lakes made by building dams in the river.

History shows us that the Sava has many old names.

The name likely comes from an old word meaning "that which waters the ground." Ancient Greeks called the river the Saos. Later, the Romans used the name Savus to describe it. The river has also been a border for many years. It marks the line between different countries and regions. For example, it forms a border between Slovenia and Croatia. It also acts as a border between Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

There are many interesting facts about the river's path.
