The land has a very long history of different people living there. Long ago, during the Neolithic period, two important cultures lived here. These were called the Starčevo and Vinča cultures. Later, many different groups moved into the area. These included the Romans, the Huns, and the Slavs. During Roman rule, the city of Sirmium was very important. It was actually one of the four capital cities of the Roman Empire.

Many different leaders and empires have controlled this land over time. For a long time, the Kingdom of Hungary ruled the region. Later, the Ottoman Empire also held much of the area. In the 1600s, the Habsburg monarchy took control after a treaty was signed. In 1848, a group of Serbs declared their own autonomous region. They called it the Serbian Vojvodina. This was a short-lived state within the Austrian Empire.

There are many interesting facts about how the people changed. In the 1700s, many Germans moved here to help with farming. By the year 1910, the population was a mix of many groups. About 34 percent were Serbs and 28 percent were Hungarians. Another 21 percent of the people were Germans.

This mix of people created a very diverse culture. You can see this in the many different churches built there.

Today, you can still see the traces of this long past. You can visit old places like the Bač Fortress.
