It sits inside a large area called the Pannonian or Carpathian Basin. The land is not part of just one country today. Instead, it is divided among three different nations. Most of the region lies in western Romania. A large part is also in northeastern Serbia. A small piece of the land sits in southeastern Hungary.

The shape of the land changes depending on where you stand. In the south and southeast, you will find high mountains. These mountains are part of the Southern Carpathians. The north and west are very different because they are flat. Some of these flat areas were once marshy and wet.

There are even two extinct volcanoes in the plains. One is called Piatra Roșie, and it stands 211 meters tall. Another is called Șumigu, which is 200 meters tall. In Serbia, you can find the Deliblatska Peščara, which is a huge stretch of sand.

Water plays a huge role in how this region looks. Three big rivers mark the borders of Banat. These are the Mureș, the Tisza, and the Danube.

The Timiș is the largest river that flows inside the region. It starts in the Semenic Mountains and travels through many cities. It passes through Caransebeș and Lugoj before flowing into the Danube. In the past, the land had many lakes and swamps. People worked to drain these areas to create more usable land.

The history of Banat is very long and full of change. Many different groups of people have lived here over the years. Long ago, Celtic tribes and the Scordisci lived in this area. Later, the Roman Empire took control of the land. The Romans built important roads, guard stations, and even public baths.

After the Romans, other groups like the Goths and Huns moved through. The Avars also had a large center of power in this region. Many different rulers have claimed this land throughout time.

Today, Banat is known for its many different cultures. Most people living there are ethnic Romanians, Serbs, or Hungarians.

Even though many groups have lived here, most residents are citizens of the three neighboring countries. The name "Banat" itself might come from many different places. Some think it comes from a word meaning "to proclaim." Others believe it comes from a Persian word for "master." This mix of history and people makes the region very special.
