The land in Dobruja has many different shapes. Most of the area is hilly. The average height of these hills is between 200 and 300 metres. The highest spot is the Țuțuiatu Peak in the Măcin Mountains. This peak reaches 467 metres high.

In the northeast, there is a marshy area called the Danube Delta. The Romanian part also has the Dobruja Plateau. The Bulgarian part has the Ludogorie Plateau. Some areas near the sea have rocky shores.

There are also shallow lakes with salty, brackish water.

The weather in Dobruja is shaped by the air around it. It has a temperate continental climate. This means the air changes with the seasons. Warm, humid air comes from the northwest in the spring and summer. In the winter, cold polar air arrives from the north.

The Black Sea also affects the weather near the coast. The average temperature is about 11 degrees Celsius inland. On the coast, it is slightly warmer at 11.8 degrees Celsius. Some high parts of the plateau are colder, staying below 10 degrees Celsius. The southern coast is the driest part of the Bulgarian region.

Dobruja is a very windy place. Wind blows on about 85 to 90 percent of all days. It usually comes from the north or northeast. The wind speed here is about twice as high as in the rest of Bulgaria. Because it is so windy, the area was once known for its windmills.

The rivers in this region are usually short. They do not carry a lot of water because there is not much rain. This makes the landscape look quite open and flat in many spots.

Many different people have lived in Dobruja throughout history. Humans have been there since the Palaeolithic period.
