It sits in the Central Region on a rocky highland plateau. This high place is part of the Eritrean Highlands. The city is very high up, over 2,000 meters above sea level. This makes it the sixth highest capital in the world. It is also the second highest capital in Africa.

The city sits near the edge of a large drop called an escarpment. This edge separates the highlands from the lowlands and the Great Rift Valley.

The weather in Asmara is cool and pleasant. This is because the city is so high up. The air is often mild rather than hot. Most of the rain falls during the months of July and August. These two months bring about 60 percent of the yearly rain. The long dry season lasts from September until April.

Sometimes the area faces droughts when it does not rain for a long time. This can make the soil dry and hard to farm. Because of this, people must be careful with the land and the trees.

Local stories tell us how the city first began. Long ago, four different groups lived on the Kebessa Plateau. These groups often fought with each other. To find peace, the women of the clans decided they should live together. The men agreed to this plan. This helped create the name "Arbate Asmera." In the Tigrinya language, this means "the four made them unite."

The city grew into an important place on a trade route to Massawa.

Asmara changed a lot during the 20th century. Italy occupied the area in 1889 and made Asmara its capital in 1897.

During this time, the city grew very quickly with new roads and buildings. Many people called it "Piccola Roma," which means "Little Rome." In 1939, there were 98,000 people living in the city. Over half of them were Italian. The city even had more traffic lights than Rome did at that time!

The Fiat Tagliero Building is a famous example of a modern style. Because these buildings are so well-kept, UNESCO named Asmara a World Heritage Site in 2017. You can still find many Italian-style cafes and restaurants here. They serve tasty foods like pasta and gelato.
