Trisong Detsen was a great king of Tibet. He ruled from the year 755 to 797. He became king when he was only 13 years old. He is known as one of the three Dharma Kings. These kings helped bring Buddhism to Tibet.

Trisong Detsen was a kind patron of this faith. In 762, he became a Buddhist himself. He invited wise masters from India to Tibet. One master was named Padmasambhava. Another was named Śāntarakṣita. They helped build Samye, the first monastery in Tibet. They also helped translate holy books into the Tibetan language.

This king was also a strong leader in war. He led a large army of 200,000 men. In 763, his army took the city of Chang'an. This was the capital of the Tang dynasty in China. He also grew the Tibetan Empire to the west. He made many deals to keep peace with China. During his rule, people also developed Tibetan medicine. When he retired in 797, he passed the throne to his son, Muné Tsenpo.
