Trisong Detsen was one of the most important leaders in Tibetan history. He was the 38th king of Tibet and ruled from 755 to 797. He became king at the young age of 13. He is remembered as one of the three "Dharma Kings." These special kings helped bring Buddhism to the Tibetan people.

His reign was a time of huge changes for the empire. He helped make the Tibetan Empire much larger than it had been before. This era is often called the empire era of Tibet. He is known as a great protector of Buddhist teachings and culture.

Religion changed a lot during his time on the throne. In 762, when he was 20, he became a Buddhist.

He invited many wise masters from India to visit Tibet. One master was named Padmasambhava, who helped teach Buddhist Tantra. Another master was named Śāntarakṣita, who helped build Samye. Samye was the very first monastery in Tibet. In 779, Śāntarakṣita helped seven Tibetans become monks. This group even included some former members of the army.

They also worked on a huge project to translate holy books into Tibetan.

Trisong Detsen was also a very strong military leader. In 763, he sent a massive army of 200,000 men to the border.

His forces defeated the Tang dynasty and took their capital, Chang'an. He even put an emperor in charge there for a short time. In 778, he made an alliance with a group called Nanzhao. Later, in 783, he signed a peace treaty with China. This treaty gave Tibet lands that are now part of Qinghai. He even pushed his empire far to the west toward the Amu Darya river.

There were many important people and ideas during his rule. His wife, Yeshe Tsogyal, became a famous master of Buddhism.

He also helped develop Sowa Rigpa, which is traditional Tibetan medicine. One famous event was a big debate held from 792 to 794. This was called the Council of Lhasa, though it happened at Samye. It was a debate between Chinese and Indian Buddhist traditions. A scholar named Kamalaśīla represented the Indian way of teaching. Many believe the king chose to support Kamalaśīla's ideas.

At the end of his life, the king stepped down from power. In 797, he retired to a palace at Zungkar to write religious texts.

He gave the throne to his second son, Muné Tsenpo. Muné Tsenpo ruled for only a year and a half. After him, the throne went to his brother, Mutik Tsenpo. Trisong Detsen's life connects the old ways of Tibet to new ideas. His work helped shape how people in Tibet lived and prayed for many years. He remains a central figure in the story of his people.
