Yonten Gyatso was the 4th Dalai Lama. He was born in Mongolia. This made him a Mongol. He was the only Mongol to hold this title. Oracles, or people who give messages, said he would be born in Mongolia.

He left for Tibet when he was ten. He traveled with his father and many others. They stopped at big monasteries on the way. In 1603, they arrived in Tibet. He became a monk at Drepung Monastery. He also studied with the 4th Panchen Lama. Later, he became the leader of two monasteries.

Life was not always easy for him. Some people in Tibet did not accept him. This led to fights for power. In 1605, a prince drove Mongol soldiers out of Lhasa. Later, warriors attacked his monastery. He had to hide in caves near hot springs.

He died in 1617 at age 27. Some people think he was poisoned. But there is no proof of this. His helper was Sonam Rapten. Sonam later helped the 5th Dalai Lama.
