A Buddha is someone who understands the Dhārma. This means they know the true nature of all things. They have found a way to stop suffering. This happens when they let go of attachments and wrong thinking.

There are different ways to reach this state. Some thinkers describe five different levels or paths. These include the Path of Accumulation and the Path of Application. There is also the Path of Seeing and the Path of Meditation. The final stage is the Path of No More Learning.

This final stage is what people call Buddhahood. To get there, people often use three types of training. They focus on ethical conduct, meditation, and wisdom. This helps them move away from the cycle of birth and death.

History tells us about many different Buddhas. The most famous is Gautama Buddha. He was the historical founder of Buddhism.

However, he was not the only one. Many traditions believe there were Buddhas before him. Some groups talk about the Five Buddha Families. One member of these families is named Amitābha. There is also a future Buddha named Maitreya. He is expected to reach awakening at a time in the future.

Different schools of Buddhism have different views on what a Buddha is like. In the Theravāda tradition, a Buddha is a supreme person. They have deep wisdom and many special powers.

Yet, they still have a physical human body. This means they can feel pain and grow old. In Mahāyāna Buddhism, the view is much different. Here, a Buddha is seen as a transcendent being. They are all-knowing and have an eternal lifespan. Some believe their life on earth was a magical display.

These ideas connect to how people live their lives. In Mahāyāna traditions, many people aim to become a Buddha. They want to reach this goal to help all living beings.

A person on this path is called a bodhisattva. Some traditions, like Zen or Pure Land, follow this goal. Other schools might focus on individual liberation instead. This shows how many different paths can lead to wonder. People continue to study these ideas to understand the world.
