Bodhi Day is a special holiday for Buddhists.

It celebrates the moment Siddhartha became the Buddha. This means he became an "Awakened One." People honor the day he found enlightenment. Enlightenment is also called "bodhi" in some languages. This event is very important to the whole religion. It marks how a person can find peace.

Siddhartha sat under a specific tree to meditate.

This was a Ficus religiosa tree. Today, people call it the Bodhi Tree. He wanted to find the root of suffering. He wanted to know how to be free from it. Some stories say a god named Mara tried to stop him. Mara is known as a demon of illusion. Siddhartha stayed focused on his goal despite this.

The Buddha described his awakening in three stages.

He spoke about these stages in the Pali Canon. During the first part of the night, he saw his past lives. He saw that he had been reborn many times. In the second part, he learned the Law of Karma. He also learned about the Noble Eightfold Path. Finally, he discovered the Four Noble Truths. This led him to a state called Nirvana.

Different cultures celebrate this day in many ways.

In Japan, Zen followers call it Rōhatsu. This name means the 8th day of the 12th month. They often meditate all night long. In China, the festival is called Laba. It happens during the first half of January. This is usually between the Winter Solstice and the Chinese New Year. These dates follow different calendar systems.

Many people follow different traditions for the holiday.

Some people choose to study the Dharma. The Dharma refers to the teachings of the Buddha. Others might chant holy books called sutras. Some followers perform kind acts for other living beings. A traditional meal might include tea and cake. While Bodhi Day is important, some also celebrate Vesak Day. Vesak Day honors the birth and passing of the Buddha too.
