In Mahayana Buddhism, there is a very special way of thinking called bodhicitta.

This term comes from two Sanskrit words. The word bodhi means awakening or enlightenment. The word citta means the mind or consciousness. Together, they describe an "awakening mind."

This is not just any thought. It is the main goal for a bodhisattva. A bodhisattva is a person striving to become a Buddha. They use wisdom and compassion to help all living beings. This kind of mind is the starting point for their entire journey.

How does this mind work in a person's life? It works by combining two big ideas. The first is the desire for perfect enlightenment. The second is a deep wish to help others.

Some thinkers say there are two main levels. The first is called relative bodhicitta. This is when a person works for the good of others. The second is called ultimate bodhicitta. This is a mind that sees the true nature of reality. Some believe this mind is already inside everyone. It is like a pure light that is waiting to be found.

History shows us many different ways to describe this idea.

In the 8th century, a writer named Shantideva wrote about it. He said people must never give up this important thought. He described it as a way to escape misery. Many ancient Indian books, like the Bodhisattvabhumi, explain these steps. They say that starting this path makes someone a "child of the Buddha." This is a very high honor in these traditions. It shows they are part of a long and holy history.

There are many ways to categorize these different thoughts.

One way is to look at three different roles. A herder-like person helps others reach awakening first. A ferryman-like person travels alongside all the living beings. A king-like person reaches the goal first and then helps.

Another way is to look at the stages of a journey. One stage is making a vow or a wish. This is like deciding to start a long trip. The next stage is being active. This is like actually walking the path every day.

People use many tools to grow this special mind. They might use meditation or special chants.

Some people look at the suffering of others to build compassion. They might also listen to holy teachings. The 14th Dalai Lama says this idea is the very essence of all teachings. It is the "squeeze juice" of what a Buddha wants to share. By growing this mind, a person can turn simple acts into something much greater. Even a small act of giving becomes a perfection when done with this heart.
