In Mahayana Buddhism, people follow a special path.

This path starts with a thought called bodhicitta. The word comes from two Sanskrit words. Bodhi means awakening. Citta means the mind. So, bodhicitta is an "awakening mind."

This mind wants to reach enlightenment. It also wants to help all living beings. This goal comes from deep compassion. Compassion is a strong care for others.

Some books say there are different types of bodhicitta. One type is a wish to help. This is like deciding to start a journey. The other type is active. This is like actually walking the path. Some stories use three roles to explain this. A herder helps others find the way first. A ferryman travels with the people. A king reaches the goal first and then helps.

People use many ways to grow this mind. They might pray or use meditation. They may also study the suffering of others. This helps them build a kind heart. This heart helps them become a bodhisattva. A bodhisattva is a being who works to become a Buddha.
