In Mahayana Buddhism, many people follow the Trikaya doctrine. This idea explains the three bodies of a Buddha. These bodies are not three separate things. Instead, they are three ways a Buddha exists.

The first is the Dharmakaya. This is the truth of all things. It is like the wide, empty sky. It has no shape or color. It is the basis for everything else.

The second is the Sambhogakaya. This is a body of joy. It is a divine body with many forms. Some books say it is like a cloud. It shows itself to special beings like bodhisattvas.

The third is the Nirmanakaya. This is the body that appears in our world. It can look like a human body. This body helps all living beings. One book says it is like falling rain. It reaches out to everyone.
