Bodhi Day is a Buddhist holiday.

It celebrates the day Siddhartha became the Buddha. This means he became an "Awakened One."

Long ago, Siddhartha sat under a tree. He wanted to find the root of suffering. He sat to meditate. Some stories say a god named Mara tried to stop him. In the Pali Canon, the Buddha tells his own story. He says he learned things in three stages during the night. First, he saw his many past lives. Next, he learned about the Law of Karma. Finally, he found the Four Noble Truths. This led him to Nirvana, a state of peace.

Many people celebrate this day. In Japan, Zen followers call it Rōhatsu. They may meditate all night. In China, the festival is called Laba. It happens in the first half of January. People may chant holy books or do kind acts. Some eat tea and cake to celebrate. They also study the Dharma, which is the teachings of the Buddha.
