Vesak is one of the most important festivals for Buddhists around the world.

It is a time to remember the life of Gautama Buddha. Many traditions celebrate three major events on this day. These are his birth, his enlightenment, and his death. Enlightenment is when he gained deep wisdom and understanding. Some people call this day Buddha Jayanti or Buddha Purnima. The name Vesak comes from the lunar month of Vaisakha.

There are many ways people celebrate Vesak. Many followers visit temples before the sun comes up. They might hoist a special Buddhist flag. They also sing hymns to praise the Buddha and his teachings. People often bring simple gifts like flowers, candles, or incense. These gifts have a special meaning for the followers. Flowers will eventually wither and candles will burn out. This reminds people that life is always changing.

Some people even wear simple white clothes to show respect.

History shows that Vesak has many different traditions. As Buddhism spread from India, it joined with many cultures. In 1950, leaders met in Sri Lanka to talk about the holiday. They decided to celebrate Vesak as the Buddha's birthday in many countries. The United Nations even recognized the day in the year 2000. In some places, like Sri Lanka, the government closes certain shops. This helps people focus on the holiday for two days.

These traditions have grown over many hundreds of years.

Different countries follow different calendars to find the right day. Most celebrations happen around the full moon in May. However, the exact date can change every year. In Japan, the birthday is on April 8. In Bhutan, it follows a different lunar calendar.

In Indonesia, monks at the Borobudur temple perform a ritual called Pradaksina. They walk around the temple to show respect. Some people in Laos even launch large rockets into the sky. These rockets are part of a festival to ask for rain.

Celebrating Vesak is also about being kind to others. Many Buddhists try to bring happiness to people who are struggling. They might give food or money to the sick or elderly. Some people release birds or insects to give them freedom.
