It honors the birth of a prince named Siddhartha Gautama. He later became the Buddha and started the religion of Buddhism. Many people in South, Southeast, and East Asia celebrate this day. Some call it Buddha Jayanti or Buddha Purnima. These names come from ancient languages like Sanskrit.

The festival is a way to remember a very important person.

How people celebrate depends on where they live. In Japan, it is called Hanamatsuri, or the Flower Festival.

People there pour a sweet drink called ama-cha on small Buddha statues. This act is like bathing a newborn baby. In Hong Kong, people light bright lanterns to show enlightenment.

In Macau, they use a special perfumed water to bathe statues. In India, many people eat a sweet rice porridge called kheer. This food reminds them of a story about a milkmaid named Sujata.

History tells us that the Buddha was born around 623 BCE.

He was born in a place called Lumbini in Nepal. His mother was Queen Maya Devi and his father was King Śuddhodana. Archaeologists have found many clues about this place. They found the Mayadevi Temple and an Ashoka Pillar from 249 BCE.

In 2022, experts found even older structures in Nepal. These findings help people learn more about the Buddha's early life.

Finding the right date can be a tricky job. Many countries use a lunisolar calendar to track time. This means the calendar follows the moon's cycles. Because of this, the date changes every year in the Western calendar. It usually falls in April or May.

During leap years, the celebration might happen in June. In China and Korea, it is held on the 8th day of the 4th month. In Tibet, it is on the 7th day of the 4th month.

This festival connects to many other big events. In many places, the birthday is part of a larger festival called Vesak.

Vesak also celebrates when the Buddha reached enlightenment. It can even celebrate his death, known as mahaparinirvana. In some places like Vietnam, these are three separate holidays. This shows how much people value different parts of his life. The festival brings people together to pray and learn.
