Buddha's Birthday is a major religious festival for Buddhists. It commemorates the birth of Siddhartha Gautama. He was a prince who later became the Buddha. He was the founder of Buddhism. This festival is celebrated across much of South, Southeast, and East Asia. Depending on the region, it may be known by many names. Some call it Buddha Jayanti or Buddha Purnima. In Sanskrit, Jayanti means birthday. Purnima means full moon day.

The timing of the festival depends on complex calendar systems. Most celebrations follow Asian lunisolar calendars. These calendars track both the sun and the moon. Because of this, the date changes every year in the Western Gregorian calendar. The holiday usually falls in April or May. In leap years, it might occur in June. In South and Southeast Asia, the birth is often part of Vesak. Vesak is a larger festival. It also honors the Buddha's enlightenment and his mahaparinirvana, or death.

Different traditions observe the day at different times. In South and Southeast Asia, followers celebrate on the full moon of the Vaisakha month. This is often called Buddha Purnima. In East Asian countries like China, Korea, Vietnam, and the Philippines, the date is different. They celebrate on the eighth day of the fourth month in the Chinese lunar calendar. Tibetan Buddhism has its own schedule too. They celebrate the birth on the seventh day of the fourth month. This is separate from their festival for enlightenment.

History and archaeology provide clues about the Buddha's origins. Tradition and archaeologists suggest he was born around 623 BCE. His birthplace was Lumbini in modern-day Nepal. His father was King Śuddhodana. His mother was Queen Maya Devi. She was delivering him while traveling to her native home. Archaeologists have found many physical markers at Lumbini. These include the Mayadevi Temple and an Ashoka Pillar from 249 BCE. In 2022, researchers found structures dating back to the sixth century BCE.

Celebration methods vary greatly by country. In Japan, the festival is called Hanamatsuri, or the Flower Festival.

People pour ama-cha, a drink made from hydrangea, over Buddha statues. This mimics bathing a newborn baby. In Hong Kong, people light lanterns to symbolize enlightenment. In Macau, they use "Five Scented-Perfumed Water" to bathe statues. In India, many people eat kheer. This is a sweet rice porridge. It honors a milkmaid named Sujata who fed the Buddha.

In some nations, the festival has deep social significance. In Bangladesh, it is a public holiday. The President and Prime Minister give speeches about religious harmony. Large fairs are held near temples to sell food and toys. In Bhutan, the month of Saga Dawa is a holy time. Devotees follow strict vegetarian diets during this month. In Indonesia, a massive procession moves from Mendut to Borobudur. Borobudur is the largest Buddhist temple in the world.

These celebrations connect to broader religious and social themes. In India, the holiday was made a public holiday by B.R. Ambedkar. This was during his time as Minister of Law and Justice. In Malaysia, the holiday is a public holiday for the Buddhist minority. In Mongolia, the festival is called Ikh Duichen. It was made a public holiday in December 2019. These various customs show how one historical figure influences many different cultures. Each tradition uses unique symbols, foods, and rituals to honor the Buddha's life.
