Musok is a traditional way of belief from Korea.

It is often called a folk religion. This means it is a tradition of the people rather than a large organization. There is no single leader or central authority in charge of Musok. Because of this, there are many different ways to practice it. People's beliefs can change depending on where they live. Some scholars also call it a vernacular religion.

Many people believe in many different gods and spirits.

These beings are called sin or gwisin. Some are powerful gods that rule the heavens. Others are spirits of ancestors who were once real people. These might include former kings, officials, or even generals. Some spirits live in nature, like in trees, rocks, or springs.

People believe these spirits can bring good luck. However, they might also bring hard times if they are offended.

Specialists called mudang help people connect with the spirit world.

Most mudang are women. They act as a bridge between people and the supernatural. They use a special ritual called a gut to help others. During a gut, they might offer food and drink to spirits. They also use song, dance, and storytelling to entertain them.

Some mudang are possessed by spirits during these rituals. Other mudang talk to spirits without being possessed by them.

There are different types of mudang based on their traditions.

One type is called the gangshin, or "god-descended." These specialists were historically common in northern Korea. Their rituals involve being personally possessed by a spirit. Another type is the seseup, or "hereditary" specialist. These practitioners were common in the southern parts of Korea. Their rituals involve spirit mediumship but not actual possession.

Musok has a very long and interesting history.

The earliest historical mentions of Musok date back to the 12th century. During the Joseon period, leaders tried to stop these practices. In the 20th century, Musok faced more hard times under Japanese rule. Later, it was also suppressed in North Korea. Today, Musok is a major part of Korean cultural identity.
