It is very popular in places like Bavaria, Austria, and Hungary. Some people say the game is very intense. It requires a lot of concentration to play well. Because of this, it might not be the best game for chatting while playing. However, the interest in the game never seems to fade. It is a challenging game that people love to master.

Two players compete to reach a goal. The aim is to collect 66 card points as fast as possible. You get these points by winning tricks. A trick happens when players lay cards in the center.

You can also get bonus points from a marriage. A marriage is when you hold a King and an Ober (or Queen) of the same suit. A trump marriage is worth 40 points. A non-trump marriage is worth 20 points.

This game has a long history. It is a descendant of a game called Mariage. The earliest description of Mariage was found in a book in 1715. Some think the name Schnapsen comes from the word "schnappen," which means to trump. Another popular idea is that people played it for drinks like schnaps. A famous professor named Johann Georg August Galletti once spoke about it. He said that studying Schnaps takes many years.

In each suit, there are five cards. These are the Ace, Ten, King, Queen, and Jack. The Jack is called a Bauer or Unter. The Queen is called a Dame or Manderl. The Ace is called an Ass or Daus.

Games are often played in sets called a Bummerl. In a Bummerl, players try to reach seven game points. Interestingly, players count their score from seven downwards. This means you record how many points you still need to win. If a player wins 7–0, it is called a Schneiderbummerl. People also play in large tournaments. One common type of tournament is called Preisschnapsen. It is a game that connects many different cultures through skill.
