Skat is a famous card game for three people.

It is a trick-taking game, which means players try to win rounds by playing the best cards. In Germany, it is incredibly popular. Some people even say more Germans play Skat than play football! Because so many people love it, they treat it like a sport. They have clubs, ranking lists, and even a national league. It is often called the "king of German card games."

Each round starts with a special way of dealing cards. Each player receives ten cards from a 32-card pack. After that, two cards are placed face down in the middle of the table. These two cards are called the Skat. The Skat is very important because it belongs to the declarer. The declarer is the player who wins the bidding phase. They pick up these two extra cards to help their hand. This can change how many points they can win.

The game has a long and interesting history. It was created around 1810 in a place called Altenburg. This area is part of what is now Thuringia, Germany. A group of people from a local card club likely made it. The name "Skat" comes from an old word meaning to discard or reject. One of the first rule books was written in 1848 by a teacher named J. F. L. Hempel. Later, players met in 1886 to make sure everyone followed the same rules. These rules helped make the game the same for everyone.

There are many ways to play the game. Players can choose suit games, grand games, or null games. In a suit game, one group of cards becomes the trump suit. Trumps are special cards that are stronger than the others. To win a round, the declarer must collect at least 61 points. The total value of all cards in the pack is 120 points. The other two players work together as a team to stop the declarer. They are not allowed to talk to each other about their cards.

Today, Skat is played all over the world. While it is most loved in Germany, it is also played in places like Poland and Austria. The International Skat Players Association helps organize big events. They run World and European Championships for players. You can find members from many different countries. These include Canada, Australia, Brazil, and even the USA. Whether in a restaurant or a big tournament, people love the skill it takes to play.
