It is usually played by two people, but you can also play with three or four. The main goal is to be the first person to reach a target score. Most games end when a player reaches 61 or 121 points. Players use strategy to win, such as calculating odds or watching their opponent's moves. This game is special because it has many subtle rules that keep it interesting.

A single game moves through three main steps called the deal, the play, and the show. First, the dealer shuffles and gives cards to each player. In a two-player game, everyone gets six cards, but others get five. Each player keeps four cards and puts the rest into a pile called the crib. This crib is a special extra hand that only the dealer uses later. Next, players lay cards down one by one during the play. They must count the cards out loud without going over 31. During the show, players look at their hands to find more points.

Cribbage has a very long history in the English-speaking world. Some say the poet Sir John Suckling created it in the early 1600s. It grew from an older English game called noddy. While noddy is rarely played now, cribbage remains very popular. The famous writer Charles Dickens even wrote about the game in his book, *The Old Curiosity Shop*.

This history shows how the game has stayed with people for hundreds of years.

There are many ways to score points during a match. You can get two points for making a pair of the same cards. You also get points for runs, which are sequences of numbers. If your cards add up to exactly 15, you score points too. You can even score points for a flush, which means having cards of the same suit.

A player might even get a high score by having a "double-double run." These many ways to score make every hand feel like a new discovery.

One of the most unique parts of the game is the cribbage board.

Instead of using paper, players use a wooden board with many small holes. They use small pegs to track their score by moving them through the holes. This action of moving pegs is called pegging. When scores are tied, the pegs sit side by side. This led to the common phrase "level pegging." From American submariners to the town of Nelson, Montana, people all over the world enjoy this classic game.
